Chapter-14: Under The Sun

A strange feeling flowed over Diego. He stood naked and hadn’t noticed it. A brief blush spread over his face as he looked around the enclosure. To his right, from nothing, a table appeared with various items.

Clothing first, thought Diego as he stepped into a supportive loin cloth. It had blue and gold leather square flaps in front and in back; and it tied in place on the sides. He laced up his leather sandals and shin guards. And, he wrapped his leather wrist and forearm guards in place.

Heaviest of his clothing, he picked up his decorative upper body armor. The blue and gold piece covered the majority of Diego’s chest and upper back. It secured in place with leather straps under his armpits, and another strap that wrapped around his back to his front. Last of his attire, he picked up a head dress with long emerald feathers. He secured it on his head, tying it in place with two leather straps under his chin. His armor forced Diego into a strong posture, resembling an ancient Aztec warrior.

Weapons second, thought Diego as he secured two titanium daggers on his lower back. He picked up a black steal machete with scabbard, and attached it to his upper back. And, in his arms, he carried a solid osmium staff.

Curiosity bloomed in Diego’s chest as he held his solid staff. He spun the thick staff in front of him, moving it with ease as it whistled on each spin. With a heavy slap, Diego stopped the staff and placed one end of the staff a few centimeters from his right foot. He straightened his arm forward and gripped the staff like an extended military banner.

An awkward feeling bubbled up within Diego as he stood ready. He felt disconnected and alone without his memories. Why was he here? Who was he? How did he get here? These ideas echoed in his soul, creating a deep void in his certainty. Despite this, Diego also sensed that he needed to be here. He needed to battle and face his combat. And, so, thinking of no other options, Diego chose to move on. “I’m ready for my battle of echoes.”

Chuey landed on Diego’s right shoulder and spun around three times and stopped. “Very good, very good, Guerrero, I think you might just keep it simple, silly. Alright then, don’t move until I tell you.” Tremendous energy rippled out of the little bird as it entered into a meditative trance.

Sharp red light pulsed from the little green bird. And, within a blink, Chuey blurred from shoulder to shoulder, moving back and forth three times. Satisfied, the bird jumped to the top of Diego’s head and immediately stopped glowing red. Steam pressure released from the bird and he double pulsed into a bright yellow glow.

Waves of heat poured down from Chuey onto Diego’s head, reaching and filling the warrior down to his toes. In a firm and clear voice, much deeper than before, Chuey spoke up, saying,

“Listen Guerrero, this world is different. Everything is magnified here. This magnification is one of the main reasons your memories are shielded away from you. Acting in truth increases your strength exponentially here. However, lies and actions of falsity greatly weaken your strength in fast exponential decay. Work on the truth and minimize your lies; and, maybe, just maybe you will succeed.”

Chuey chirped at the air three times and continued, “Succeed here; and the strength you gain from this echoing reality will leave with you to your own reality.”
