Chapter-15: Beneath The Full Moon
Chuey landed on Diego’s right shoulder, pecked at his ear lobe, and said: “Simple, simple, simple, silly, …. I healed you. I carried you over to the rest area. And I got rid of the sun eagle’s body. You know, I’m much, much stronger than I look.”
Diego opened his mouth but said nothing. He stared at Chuey with a perplexed expression and slightly shook his head.
“Hmmm,” said Chuey, “I see you are still slow to understand. Let me explain. You were never asleep, only in a different area of this echo of reality. Even now, you are not asleep. This is a different reality. However, the scars and knowledge you earn here will remain with you after you leave. That is, if you succeed and keep it simple, silly. Remember, time is different here. You could even say that you are outside of time in this space.”
More confusion settled inside Diego’s mind as he listened to Chuey. And, for a dozen sets of a dozen breaths, he tried making sense of what he heard. But failed. He winced, rubbed his head and decided not to question the nature of his sleep or this reality any further.
Instead, Diego turned his attention to more practical and immediate concerns, he said, “I’m ready for the next battle. Except, my little green bird, I’m starving and thirsty.”
“Excellent, excellent,” said Chuey as his head feathers rose and fell with bouncing joy. He flapped his little wings and continued, “on our path to the next battle there is a lake midway. We can catch a little fish, drink some lake water and then move on from there. Wait, wait, before we go, do you see that gold trim border on the blanket you were using? It wraps around the blanket twice, pull it off; you can use it as fishing line.”
Diego grabbed the emerald blanket and inspected it. He maneuvered the blanket and ripped the border off and then tossed the rest of the comforter back onto the bed. He picked up his weapons and a large empty gourd that lay next to the bed. And he secured everything in place, and he stepped off with Chuey.
The little green bird navigated in the direction of the next fog wall. Even from this distance, the wall shimmered in its slothful downward motion of dark greys and charcoal blacks.
The two moved through the open field and Diego’s curiosity shifted to his closer surroundings. He inspected the scars created by the eagle on the ground. Blood, mud and various large feathers lay scattered about the center of the field.
However, more mysterious than the missing sun eagle, there were extra marks, to the side where the dead eagle had crashed. These were larger than the eagle’s talons, and they had pressed much deeper into the land. Diego didn’t remember them from before. He didn’t care to dwell on the added details.
“My mind is quick to forget,” said Diego. “I have already forgotten how those other marks happened.”
Chuey did not reply or even glance at Diego. Instead, he only chirped louder and twirled higher through the air.
Diego looked back at the marks on the ground and shook his head. He shrugged it off, paid little attention to the clouded past and followed close behind Chuey.
