Chapter-14: Under the Sun
Beads of sweat covered Diego’s body. Waves of heat circulated over him and through him. The little bird adjusted its perch on his head and its yellow light faded away. In its place, a bright green glow pulsed out in rhythmic breaths. The light increased in intensity, causing a blinding aura to flicker about Diego. Tiny claws gripped Diego’s head and Chuey extended and opened his wings wide.
“Now, now, now, Guerrero … step, step, step … move through the fog … and battle with the truth of your reality.”
One step and another step and the elastic fog barrier rubbed against Diego’s movement. The cold resistance spread a thin layer of frost over his body. Despite this, Diego still burned with hot dense sweat, quickly melting it away.
A third step and Diego moved free of the fog wall. He looked over his shoulder and stared at a heavy fog that wrapped around an enclosure: except, from this side, the fog shimmered with various shades of gold and black.
Diego turned from the enclosure and gazed upon a large-opened field covered in short green grass. Beyond the crisp one-acre field, large pines, thick trunk sequoias and sky-scraping redwood trees stood as spectators. The density of trees extended far and wide, reaching another wall of grey and black fog.
The smell of tart cherry wood, and fresh cut grass, forced Diego to rub his eyes. He tilted his head back and looked up and found a rich blue sky with vibrant cotton clouds. But, dominating all else, a powerhouse in the sky burned tyrannically and loud, hurtful to behold. The sun’s presence demanded immediate respect. And it forced Diego to sneeze and to bow his head, slapping his attention back to the open green field.
Honey glazed lilies and yellow gerbera daisies lay scattered at the perimeter of the open field. While, sprinkled about, huge amber boulders lay half buried in the center of the grass arena.
Diego searched for his guide and panicked. He didn’t see Chuey anywhere. His heart pounded against his ribs as he gulped up the humid air. From an echoing distance, he heard the little green bird call out from within his mind: “On guard, Guerrero, alert, alert … alert, it’s coming to defend the house of the sun.”
Diego tensed his grip on his staff and searched the trees, the field and the sky. Yet, he found nothing of danger. Still, he advanced and reached the middle of the field despite his unease.
A large shadow of a winged creature blurred over him, causing Diego to flinch into a defensive stance. Still, he continued to search for Chuey.
“Where are you, little friend? What’s coming?”
“Silly warrior, I’m within your mind and heart, stop looking for me out there. Be careful, the sun eagle is near.”
A loud crash and the earth rumbled in front of Diego. Straight ahead, a large eagle stood in a small crater as it shook itself. Taller than Diego’s height, the sun eagle spread its wings and yelled up toward the sun. Wings wide and leveled, the eagle thrust its head forward and yelled again as it stared at the warrior.
