Chapter-4: Satisfy Me
Luz smoothed out his neat mustache and considered her guesses. “When I woke up in a corn field,” he said, “the only memory I had was of an explosion. Other than that, I don’t know if I’m a demon or anything else. He … that man … he hasn’t told me much. Only that every New Year’s Eve we fight. Somehow, I believe him, that, if I fight well enough against him … just well enough, it counts as a victory. And, he promises me more information about my past, if, I win.”
A confused expression slapped across Nanda’s swollen face. And for a full breath she lost herself in Luz’s green eyes.
“What … what man, Señor Luz? What’s his name?”
Luz quickly searched their surrounding area, fully alert with wide eyes. He exhaled hard and rubbed the back of his neck and waved his right hand at Nanda.
“Shhh, shhh … not so loud, mujer. If I say his name … well, I just don’t say his name.”
Dread and interest bloomed within Nanda’s stomach. She thought, how can it be that this other man is much stronger, much more hellish than … my…?
“This year,” said Luz, “we fight in Palomas, Jalisco. When I win, he promises to tell me more of my hidden memories and of my true purpose on Earth. The thing is … in three hundred years … I have never won a fight against him. Not even close.”
Luz grinned with sadness in his eyes. He looked at each of his hands and opened and closed them with disappointment.
“On certain years, I also have to meet extra conditions. For this year, my task is to walk from Niagara Falls, New York, to Palomas, Jalisco. And I’m not allowed to use my abilities of travel. Even though walking is annoying at times, I don’t mind it because … because I really want to know about my past. It’s such a horrible feeling, Nanda. Not knowing why I’m here or where I came from. It’s horrible. The unknown about my past and about my purpose … the not knowing is torture for me.”
A few drowsy blinks and Nanda yawned and covered her mouth with her right hand.
“New Year’s Eve is three months away,” said Nanda with a stretch, “is that … is that enough time for you … for us, to get there and prepare?” She opened her mouth wide and yawned again.
“It’s not a problem. I only need about an hour of sleep on most nights, and much less on other nights. Walking more than twenty-two hours a day is light work for us. Besides, this year is different. I know it is. I can feel there is a good chance to fight well enough—to win.”
