The Seventh Foundational Belief of Consciousness:

What is an approximate definition of free will?

     Without a doubt, having a solid understanding of free-will is critical to understanding writer’s block. Why? Because you must have a clear model of choice of responsibility, which allows you to truly believe that you have a choice in receiving and in accepting all aspects of your writing. More importantly, you need a consistent model that claims you may choose to improve your writing or not. Hence, free-will.

     But, before providing an approximate definition of free-will, it is important to address some of the most troubling misconceptions of free-will.

     For instance, free-will is often mistaken as the ability to see into the future; and to be able to make the best possible predictions about the future, across all possible futures. Not surprising, these heinous misconceptions of free-will portray this fundamental aspect of all life as being magical, imaginary and nonsensical. But most disturbing of all is the claim that free-will operates independently of past information. Or, that free-will operates independent of reality or of the universe.

     To clarify, free-will involves the ability to make a choice and to take action in reality, which means awareness and connectedness with reality. In greater detail, free-will involves memory, analysis of the past and intentional trial and error decisions in the present. Moreover, in order to make any decision in reality, there must be some nonzero level of awareness of organized time, in particular with the past.  

     Let us notice the details.

     An emphasis must be placed here. Free-will only operates in the present by using solely the past—not the future—to make an intentional trial decision in the acting present. Therefore, using free-will does not guarantee any outcome, which means there is never a 100% guarantee of best choice of options in reality, for any potential future.

     Furthermore, having the ability to perceive the best possible outcome, in any future, at 100% certainty, is a contradiction to free-will and to the mortal aspect of humanity. To know the event or outcome of any choice to be 100% true in the future, from the point of view of the present, violates the nature of free-will into a false view of predestination. For, if a person did have access to the precise future, then this information or awareness would negate the whole purpose of having free-will of choice, or of a need for evolution, or for that matter, life.

      Before moving on, there is one last comment about free-will that needs to be emphasized. There exists dependence on awareness and of connection with reality across past experiences and events, when describing free-will. Hence, free-will is a type of function that is dependent on both consciousness and evolution.

Free-will is the ability of life to consciously choose to use information about the past, in order to make an intentional trial decision in the present, for the purpose of accomplishing the goal of evolution.

What is a rough draft?

     It is extremely important to know what the purpose of the rough draft and the rough draft process are. Otherwise, a writer may fall into the wrong expectations and reach for the wrong objectives to develop in their overall writing process. Of course, you as the writer may choose to disagree with my perspectives; but at the very least I present them for you to analyze.

      Rough Draft is the initial unformed and unpolished gathering of material that is used as a foundation to create a growing work of living writing.

     With all due respect, often, this is where a lot of the issues with writer’s block are born and nurtured. Writers simply refuse to accept the true purpose of a rough draft. As a result, it is extremely important to explain the intricacies of the definition of a Rough Draft.

     A rough draft is the clay, the stone or the wood that a sculptor gathers and then uses to create their work of art. A rough draft is the selection of paints, of canvas and of sketches a painter uses to create their painting. A rough draft is the gathering of the raw materials that may be used to create a growing work of art.

     For a writer, the raw material of a rough draft is a growing work of art, that consists of blocks of unchiseled: ideas; scenes; emotions; contradictions; rationales; fears; loosely connected story; truths; lies; wants and desires; characters; some story; some plot; observations; conclusions; or pure imagination. For a writer, the rough draft is the opportunity to get things wrong, to get things messy; but most importantly, to get things done in order to have something to create and to improve from.

     The purpose of a rough draft is to have something from which to create a better living work of writing. And I am being very precise here. A written work is alive. There will always be more a writer can improve on, nurture and train and expect from their written work. The purpose of a rough draft is to begin the life of the written work.

     To be clear, the only goal a writer has with the rough draft is to get the rough draft done. The rough draft is not the initial editing phase, not the completion phase and not the publishing phase. Moreover, the rough draft is not the tenth round of editing phase, not the comparison phase and not the Nobel Prize phase. Equally as important, the initial draft is not the judgement phase.

     The rough draft is supposed to be the rough material phase. An artist (that’s also you) does not need to belittle their gathered materials. An artist values and appreciates their initial, unformed living work of art. The rough draft must be allowed to be: a rough sketch, an unclear beginning, a hidden carving and an opportunity to be alive.
