Chapter-16: State of In Between
Chuey perched on a corner post of the bed and watched. He tilted his green head, puffed his feathers and waited for the warrior to regain his awareness.
Diego yawned and stretched under the blanket.
“It’s time,” said Chuey. He flapped his wings quickly three times. “Are you ready to go, Guerrero? It’s time to move on.”
Diego sat up in bed and searched beyond the little bird. He spat his attention all over the stone blocked arena. Nothing remained. No blood, no struggle and no corpse. “Not again,” he said as he turned to sit closer to the edge. He sighed and continued his hunt over the desolate night sky and arena. The stars remained fixed. The giant blue moon, frozen in place. But where did the full moon jaguar go? His head ached as he tried to remember.
“How did you do it?” asked Diego. “How did you get rid of the jaguar’s body?”
Chuey hopped onto the bed and walked over to Diego. He looked up at him and said, “Oh, that’s simple, simple, silly, I ate the remains. I’m much, much bigger than what I appear. In my final form, I can devour a little sun eagle, a little goldfish and a little moon jaguar in one bite each. Don’t worry, don’t worry; I’m on your side. Focus on your next battle. Are you ready to move?”
Diego stared at the little green bird and gagged with a frigid spread of faint. Goose bumps shook his body, forcing him to gasp for air and cough. To be safe, he decided otherwise and ignored his curiosity for more information.
“On my side … I hope so,” said Diego. “But you’re right; the next battle is the target. Besides, I think I understand what you mean by much bigger and final form. At any rate, yes, I’m ready.”
Chuey chirped and flew around Diego, and said, “Great, great, great let’s move on. Except, this time, leave your weapons behind on the bed. The next battle requires you to enter with no items. That means no weapons and no clothing … only you.”
“What, what did you say?” asked Diego. “Nothing? But why?”
The little bird replied quickly and to the point, “Don’t freeze up, now. You’re doing just fine, very lucky, but still fine. The requirements for the next battle are strict: no weapons and no clothing. Those are the rules.”
“Fantastic,” said Diego. He shrugged his shoulders and stood. He adjusted the blanket and placed his weapons across the stone-shaped bed. “Fine, nothing it is,” he said as he removed his warrior uniform and placed each article of clothing on top of his weapons. All naked, he stepped back with a noticeable difference. No weight pulled him down, no pressure clamped on his chest and most freeing, his heart and mind beat within a serene lightness. He turned to his little green guide and waited.
“Yes, yes, that’s it, Guerrero,” said Chuey, “fully naked and ready to accept. Oh, one last thing before we go. I’m going to need to light your path down the spiral steps; it’s an enclosed staircase and has no light. So, stay close to me and watch your footing.”
Diego lifted his gaze up at the moon one last time and said, “That’s fine, light the way down.” Chuey glowed a soft peach cream light and they descended into the dark spiral of steps.
