Chapter-4: Satisfy Me
Cana returned with a black and white horse that matched Nanda’s description. The horse whinnied with a disheveled appearance; and it moved with various muscle spasms, taking short choppy steps. And even though Cana modified his form to appear as a regular extra-large dog, the horse’s anxious nose and instincts knew better.
“Is this the horse?” asked Luz. He approached the frightened animal.
“Yes, yes, that’s it.” Nanda smiled and jumped up, filled with excitement. Quickly, she passed by Cana and reached for the satchel on the horse. She pulled out the small gold-filled bag and felt her guitar strings inside. She paused for a moment and pulled them out. Her face trembled as she secured the guitar strings away in her coat.
Nanda brushed her melancholy away, smiling with sad eyes. She extended her arm out to Luz.
“Here, señor, this is the bag.”
Luz grinned and whistled a smooth tune and shook his head. “Not to me. Him, bring it over to Cana.”
Cana sat on his hind legs and yawned at Nanda. She smelled of sweet-tart fear, and it made him laugh inside.
Nanda gulped and nervously approached Cana. She extended her shaking hand with the bag and hoped her arm wouldn’t be torn off.
The hell hound approached her and inhaled deep and closed his eyes tight. His nose twitched a few times, and he opened his eyes. Nanda stepped back and shuddered at the ruby glowing eyes from last night.
Cana barked several times and turned to look southeast.
“Is that so, jovencito? Well, then,” said Luz. He rubbed his left arm and looked at Nanda. “Your Claridad Torres is in the Yucatan.”
Cana barked once more with annoyance as his eyes returned to his normal yellow.
“Cancun,” said Luz, “she is in Cancun, to be exact.”
“That’s far from here,” said Nanda. “How does he know that? How does your dog know where she is?”
Three loud barks erupted from Cana. He stood firm and growled at Nanda. She flinched and flung her arms up in defense and tripped over her steps and landed hard.
“Tranquilo, joven,” said Luz with an amused look. “Cana is my assistant, not my dog. He stopped being a dog … decades ago.”
Shamefaced, Nanda looked at Cana and apologized several times. Goose bumps spread all over her body as she stood back up and cautiously stepped closer to Luz. Cana gave out a low mumbled growl. He licked over his fangs and pointed his nose up at the sky and walked away.
“That’s part of his enhancement. Once he knows a person’s scent, he can see and smell them anywhere on the planet, especially if he gives them his mark. See for yourself; look at the front part of your hair, that’s his mark on you.”
Puzzled, Nanda moved her hair forward and frowned. Two thin strips of her front hair had turned bright white.
“What in the world is this … Cana?” asked Nanda.
Cana licked his snout and yawned, ignoring her as he looked off to the west.
“That woman has to wait, Nanda,” said Luz. “Don’t worry about her; should she move from her present location, Cana will know. For now, we need to head to Palomas, Jalisco. I need to prepare for my New Years Eve fight. But what exactly do you desire with this Claridad Torres?”
Luz leaned forward and savored Nanda’s heart and soul. He tried to hold back a smile as he waited for her delicious honesty to bubble out in stronger bursts.
Nanda ruminated for several long breaths. Her blood pumped harder. She remembered the woman that betrayed her, and took from her, and shamed her. At length, she replied with an empty tone of voice.
“Very simple, señor,” said Nanda. She touched her guitar strings in her front coat pocket. “I desire a miserable death for her. I want her to pay for the suffering and humiliation she caused me. Killing her with my very own hands, that’s my simple desire. Her painful death will satisfy me.”
