Chapter-6: Midnight Rum
Thumb squinted at Luz and ignored the puppy on the ground. He raised his butcher blade again and lunged forward. Luz smiled and didn’t flinch. Instead, he smoothed out his neat mustache and whistled along with the Liberty Song that resumed playing overhead.
A shadow blurred past Thumb, forcing him to spin a quarter to his right. Dizzy and confused, he focused his sight on the ground. The puppy stood atop a severed arm that gripped a butcher blade, his butcher blade. Stunned, Thumb gawked at his bloody side and yelled in a silent, terrified cry.
“Holy fucks giving,” said Hickory. “What in the all shits just happened?” He continued climbing the ladder to the loft with his sea-weed limbs. Faster, he slipped, and he hurried for the safety of the open barn window.
“Mother of God,” said Dickory, “that little puppy pit-bull, it’s gone and turned demon dog. That tiny turd ripped it all off, his fuc’in, … oh my God in heaven … Je’….”
A loud quaking whistle from Luz forced Dickory’s mouth shut. In another blur, the little puppy shot through the air; and he ricocheted on the ground backward and bicycle kicked Dickory’s head clean off his neck. The head slammed against the barn double doors and bounced twice on the ground, eyes twitching in shock. The decapitated head blinked its eyes on his own body and stared at the blood gushing up in fountain arcs from his remaining neck.
The little pup rushed forward and plunged through the chest of the unarmed man, ripping his pumping heart out in the process. Thumb’s mouth opened and closed several times as blood spilled out of him in rhythmic jerks, from his front and from his back.
Covered in a coat of blood, the puppy turned his attention up, focusing on Hickory. The last man ran toward the loft window smelling of piss and shit. The pup barked several times as it side glanced at the man in the bone white hat.
“Not exactly,” said Luz, “you can’t fly. It’s more like a chained series of connected skips through space. Go on. You seem to have a handle on it—still, practice makes perfect.”
A horrible penetrating gaze cut through Hickory, forcing him to tremble in place. He managed to reach the open window. And he smiled and imagined running through the apple fields after exiting the barn. But midnight sadness filled his bones as he turned around. Tears and snot ran down his red face. He tried to speak: “I’m sor’…”
