Chapter-16: State of In Between

“Wait,” said Diego, “there is something.” His shadow rippled across the pool’s surface. He flinched back and gasped. The darkness took form, blurred at first, but then his reflection appeared. The image bent and warped in the water. And, little by little, his image came into hyper clear focus.

Diego stared. His detailed image reflected in the pool stared back at him with disbelief. “You there,” he said, “I see you.” His reflection nodded at him, reached out to him and knew him.

The image waved at Diego, smiled and stopped breathing.

To his terrifying realization, Diego stopped breathing too. He moved his lips and opened and closed his mouth; yet no air graced his lungs. His ability to breathe left him.

Diego massaged his throat and tried to scream for air and failed. He looked at his very own image. His reflection grinned with amusement and gestured for him to jump in.

Diego tried to think of another option, of another way, and failed yet again. In the end, he jumped into the pool … and fell.

He floated downward, in a crunched position with his arms and legs tucked inward on his stomach. Slowly, Diego fell toward an unknown abyss. Time moved at a much slower pace, in this dark wet space. It ticked … ticked … tocked … and stopped.

Diego entered nothingness, drifting, falling in place, in complete silence.

In between here and there, when and then, Diego regained his awareness mid fall. He fell and fell at an increasing rate. Bubbles rushed out of his mouth and nose, and his stomach braced against the rushing descent. Racing, dropping for an incredible distance, he hoped his fall would end soon. He braced harder and choked on nothing. And, in the blink of a thought, he slammed to a stop, landing on beige-warm onyx blocks.

Diego blinked and yawned. He lay outside, above ground and under a strange day. He coughed several times and relief massaged his heart. He could breathe again.

Diego found himself lost on top of another steep pyramid. He stood and inspected his new surroundings with immense awe.

The sky vibrated with a strange darkness: different from night, different from day. High above, there glowed a dark disk that covered the sun and blocked most of the light. From behind the darkness, sunlight shimmered and flared along the perimeter of the disk. And all around, the land bathed in a perplexing mixture of light and dark. Alive within a conundrum, the heavens breathed neither day nor night; time, space and creation melded together forming a state of echoing in between.

Other pyramids decorated the landscape at various distances from the one Diego stood on. Fields of orange maize and other strange crops lay clustered throughout the land. Emerald-blue palm trees, gold and red gerbera daisies and tall forest-green grass intermingled together, creating beautiful geometric designs. And, from the sky, three rivers flowed and crashed onto the earth and snaked about the land.

Diego ignored the growing pressure of air that gathered around him. The land and sky and illumination consumed his entire awareness. And he didn’t notice the series of four heavy thuds that landed behind him. But the pressure moved closer and enveloped him in an unbearable shadow weight.
