Chapter-6: Midnight Rum
The bloody puppy rushed forward at an incredible booming rate. He launched the last man up through the roof. Tiles and boards ejaculated outward, and Hickory rose three hundred meters into the night sky as the clocks struck nine.
Hickory groaned and struggled to breathe. He fell and tumbled back toward the red ochre barn. Mid fall, the bloody puppy blurred up and bit Hickory on his nape.
Twisting and spinning as the two fell, the puppy angled his prey toward the barn doors and flung him with tremendous force.
Hickory crashed through the red doors and ploughed the earth between two lines of apple trees before coming to a stop.
Crumpled like an accordion, Hickory lay dead with his head spun around twice. He looked over his own mangled back, frozen in dead shock.
“Well done, assistant, well done,” said Luz as he slow clapped with respect. “What about these other men tied up on the floor?”
The little puppy approached Luz and marveled over his own work. He barked a series of times and wiped blood from his nose.
“Oh, these two are your old owners,” said Luz, “Pablo Rivera and Guellermo Danza.” He opened a canteen and cleaned his young assistant of his bloody coat.
The puppy barked multiple times as the cold water poured over him. He gasped for air and continued barking several more times. The water washed away thick blood and mush, revealing his chestnut brown coat again.
“They were attacked,” said Luz, “because of a mission they have to run at night—to Lexington and to Concord.” He leaned forward and rubbed his assistant behind his head. And he continued to pour water over the pup’s back.
A multitude of quick barks erupted from the puppy. Filled with sadness, the pup turned and looked at his dead mother on the ground. Tears ran done his face and into his small baby teeth.
“Your mother tried to stop them?” asked Luz. He looked at the massive black pit bull on the floor. “I see. She was stabbed in the chest by Thumb. Hmm, I suppose this mission of red coats must of have been very important to these tavern men.”
The puppy made its way over to his mother and paused in front of her. He barked a series of cries and licked his mother’s paws.
“Sure,” said Luz, “we can bury her under that huge apple tree. What name do you want carved into the tree?”
The pup’s face trembled with tears. He barked twice.
“That’s a nice name,” said Luz, “Midnight Rum.”
