Introduction

The uncomfortable reality is that not having an accurate understanding, belief and consistent practice of habits makes writing more difficult than it needs to be. This is especially true in the writing stages leading up to and including the rough draft stage.

The problem is not an intellectual fault in understanding habits from a writer’s perspective. In all honesty, most writers have no problem agreeing with the statement: Habits are an integral part of the successful completion of any writing project, be it fiction or nonfiction.

Belief. The main issue is that most writers do not believe in their core being, that habits play such an enormous role in their personal writing process. Instead, a significant subset of writers believe that the writing process must exist in a purely artistic and unencumbered (occasionally fortunate) way of writing life. As such, any appearance of a formulaic or structured system introduced into any stage of the writing process, is viewed with hesitancy and skepticism. Which means, consistent and deliberate writing habits are rarely fully established by such an artistic-centric writer.

Here is the main claim of this chapter: well-formed and consistently practiced habits are the key to unlocking the source of all writing, from beginning to end, be it fiction or nonfiction.

Much like before, consider this chapter to be another fictional story, a modern myth or collection of potential useful tools….

There are seven active beliefs of habits that help to recruit total consciousness in writing, which may minimize writer’s block. First, what is an approximate definition of a habit, from the perspective of consciousness? Second, what are the three strict factors of a habit? Third, where do ideas, short stories and novels come from? Fourth, why are cues in writing habits important? Fifth, why are practice and routines in writing habits important? Sixth, why are reward-recuperatives in writing habits important? Seventh, why does a writer need to establish the habit of writing from a total consciousness relationship?

The First Active Belief of Habits:

What is an approximate definition of a habit,

from the perspective of consciousness?

There are three foundational observations needed to establish an approximate definition of a habit, from the perspective of consciousness.

To begin, all actions—be it thinking, feeling, believing or physically directed movement in reality—are a result of a person’s motivation, as defined in Equation-1 from chapter two.  The second observation is that each person has their total consciousness partitioned into three types or orders of organization: e-consciousness, ava-consciousness and i-consciousness (see chapter one). And the third observation is that repetition serves as another form of communication between e-consciousness to ava-consciousness and to i-consciousness.

Putting all these three observations together gives us the following explanation of what a habit is.

Basically, the principal mover (motivator) or explorer in a person’s waking life is directed by their e-consciousness. Then when a routine or practice is repeated in a particular manner and to a significant amount of repetition, this communicates to the person’s ava-consciousness and i-consciousness that an important task, practice or routine is needed for continued normal life development. As a result, eventually this repeated routine, practice or state of living becomes more, and more, supported by the efforts of ava-consciousness and i-consciousness. The reason for this is to allow your e-consciousness to focus on other more unique events or needs in life exploration. Ultimately, with enough meaningful life exposure in evolution, this is perhaps how habits become instinct.

1. What is an approximate definition of a habit, from the perspective of consciousness?

A habit is a structured routine or process that has been practiced significantly enough by a person’s e-consciousness, such that a person’s total consciousness becomes more, and more, involved in the reproduction of that structured routine or process in life.
