Chapter-14: Under the Sun

The eagle’s breath slapped Diego in the face, surrounding him with the putrid smell of old fish eggs and rotten sardines.

Diego gagged and covered his mouth and nose. The strong stench forced him to sidestep several times as he wiped his eyes. Tears rubbed away, he marveled at the giant beast.

The eagle’s head, neck and wings were covered in a pitch-black glittering plumage. The rest of the bird’s body was a mixture of shimmering golden feathers. Its beak shined of white crystal gold; and its eyes were a platinum glow of ruby light, that left streaks in the air as it moved its head. The eagle’s talons glistened: pearl black, slick and long.

Diego shook his head and moved into action. He charged forward without much thought, clutching onto his metal staff with flexed arms. The thick staff bounced left and right as he sprinted toward the avian beast.

In response, the sun eagle rushed forward, moving much faster than Diego. Two wing flaps and the eagle made first contact, catching a hold of the osmium weapon with its claws.

The sun eagle shrieked and flipped forward and flung the metal staff and the warrior across the field.

Diego tumbled, slid and bounced to a stop twenty meters away. Scratched and bruised and bleeding, Diego plunged his osmium staff into the ground and used it to crunch up.

“You’re a tough bird,” said Diego as he spat blood to his left. His heart pounded and jumped in his chest, as he stepped forward to regain his balance. “Strong too.” He widened his stance and searched for the beast.

The eagle raced up toward the sky and spread its wings in front of the blinding sun. It paused for a breath, casting a long shadow on the land.

Awe struck, Diego gasped with wide eyes as the eagle tucked into a dive. The beast plunged right toward Diego, with incredible speed, and slammed him hard into the green arena. Once more, the eagle shrieked. And this time it clawed at the ground, flinging dirt and grass at Diego’s face as it flipped backwards into the air.

Caught by surprise, Diego blocked his face as best he could but failed. The dirt mixture slapped into his eyes and distracted his attention for a few seconds.

Another ear ripping shriek by the sun eagle and it attacked. It carved two tracks of bleeding marks on Diego’s chest that reached down to his thighs. Blood and jagged pain spilled forth, sending Diego stumbling sideways, missing a second clawing.

Desperate panic flowed in his veins as Diego struggled to breathe. Still, he moved for an attack. He ignored his injuries, and he swung his metal staff in a large horizontal arch in front of him. The osmium staff whistled as it moved with great force. Lucky hit, Diego connected a solid smash on the eagle’s head. The hit stunned the eagle’s eyes shut. It quivered in place for three blinded half wing flaps.

Diego smiled. He tossed his staff forward at the eagle’s head and gripped onto his daggers and pulled them to the ready.

Distracted by the sudden movement, the sun eagle blinked frantically and stretched its neck for the solid metal staff. Its beak chomped up the heavy weapon in reflex.
