Introduction
The main goal of this chapter is to convince you (the writer) that consciousness exists as it is described in this chapter. Once that is accomplished, the connection between consciousness, writer’s block and the recommendations expressed in this book become more believable, and more likely to be practiced.
Belief is the huge difference. Most writers already have a general idea of how to minimize writer’s block, such as having: habits, routines, discipline, consistency, goals, responsibilities, various writing techniques, life experience, etc. The problem is not what to do, but why: why are writing habits so important; why are routines and discipline and imagination so important? More specifically, the problem of writer’s block becomes an issue of theory, philosophy and analytical dissection of proof, in order to believe into action. Hence this book.
However, given that you are a writer, you may not be convinced of my metaphysical interpretation of consciousness. Therefore, consider my theory of consciousness as a useful story or a useful modern myth, that is intended to help you in your writing process.
Before continuing with this chapter, I need to share one critical example about pursuing honesty toward truth in your writing process.
Example: My Supposed Reading Problem
Being a writer means that you must also accept being a reader. At least, that’s what the great high and mighty champions of writing claim. And, without a doubt, I do agree with them.
But there is one small problem. I don’t like reading.
Yet I am still able to read for at least one hour on most days. How is that possible?
Simple. I acknowledge the truthful experience of reading from my perspective. More importantly, I don’t practice the perspectives of others about their reading experiences. Hold for a moment, motivated writer, let me be crystal clear with what I am stating here. There is nothing wrong with being filled with the happiness of reading or even with the pleasure of reading. If this really is the case for you, then great, fantastic and good for you. However, this is not the case for me.
Being completely honest, pleasure from reading has never occurred to me. Believe me, I’ve tried different approaches: sitting down; laying down; mental projections of bliss; standing and even walking on the treadmill while reading. Still, pleasure never materializes in me when I am reading. Yet I do read on a regular basis, aside from work related commitments.
Why? Because I am honest with myself about my reading experience, which is that: reading has never been fun for me. Contrary to what many would like to assume, this is not a problem in reading. What makes it a problem is when I lie to myself and think or say that the entire reading process is supposed to be fun. Believe me, I tried looking for the fun in reading; but I never could find it. By the fifth grade, I stopped looking for the fun in reading; and instead, I started looking for a solution to help keep reading. At ten years old, I still had more school ahead of me and I needed to keep reading in school.
Here’s how I solved my supposed reading problem. I started by acknowledging all the truths associated with reading, from my personal experiences and from my overall understanding of reading, such as:
Reading sucks; reading is not fun; reading requires hard work; reading requires lots of patience; reading requires consistency; reading requires concentration; reading is training of the mind; training involves discomfort in order to make progress; training makes you stronger; training makes you more disciplined; reading helps to lower your stress; reading has tremendous cognitive health benefits; all geniuses in the world claim that reading is gargantuanly important to thinking and to living well.
And so, though others may read every day for the bursting pleasure of it … I don’t. The truth is that whenever I tell myself that reading is fun, it’s a horrible lie. And when I lie to myself about reading, I eventually stop reading for long periods of time, weeks and months.
Here is the lesson that brings this example to a close: Never lie to yourself, because you can’t. You only end up rejecting the progress of who you are. A much better way is to see and to accept reality for what it is and then adapt to it.
I read every day because there are a dozen other reasons that give reading tremendous practical value in my life. I read every day because reading is part of my daily personal cognitive training. I read every day because I believe reading is necessary for my overall personal and professional development in life. And … if reading is boring, difficult and discomforting, that’s fine; and if reading is sometimes enjoyable, that’s fine too, but not required.
Guess what? I also don’t involve myself in the writing process because it’s pure ecstasy for me. That would be a lie. Instead, I accept that writing and being involved in the writing process is a significant aspect of my core values in life. Eventually I learned to accept that to ignore the writing process for too long in my daily life is a horrible lie of living. I know this now—after decades of ignoring and denying the core value of writing in my life.
In essence, this manuscript is the story and the philosophy that I believe in, which allows me to be involved in the entire writing process—from beginning to end. Of great importance to you, this perspective that I am sharing with you is what allows me to overcome writer’s block when it appears.
My hope is that this book will help you in some capacity to gain a better understanding of your writer’s block. And, in gaining understanding, it is my belief that you will be better suited to minimize your writer’s block, when it should visit you. Hopefully my ideas will help you.
The story begins with addressing your foundational philosophical beliefs. More to the point, once upon in a reality….
There are nine foundational beliefs of consciousness that contribute to minimizing writer’s block. First, what is an approximate definition of consciousness? Second, what are the three types or orders of consciousness? Third, why does consciousness exist in a partitioned-type manner? Fourth, what are emotions? Fifth, what percentage of distribution exists within consciousness? Sixth, what is an approximate definition of evolution? Seventh, what is an approximate definition of free will? Eighth, what is a rough draft? Ninth, what is the rough draft process?
The First Foundational Belief of Consciousness:
What is an approximate definition of consciousness?
Every writer needs to have at the very least a rough understanding of consciousness. Why? Simple, because writers typically write about life, reality, existence, time, space, emotions and other human beings. And consciousness plays a very significant role in all these aspects of the world. Not to mention, all writers have consciousness; and, maybe, just maybe, consciousness plays a big role in the entire writing process. Well, at least, I believe so.
Except, there is one massive problem when it comes to understanding consciousness. No one really knows exactly what consciousness is. To be honest, neither do I. And I’ve written multiple books exploring the metaphysics of consciousness. The truth of the matter, consciousness is truly an undefined term, with respect to human senses, understanding and imagination.
Even so, I still believe there is tremendous value in having approximate descriptions or definitions of what, why and how consciousness is.
In any event, here is my approximate observation and definition of consciousness.
Consciousness (or more precisely, Total Consciousness) is the multi-collected level of awareness and connectedness with reality, such that consciousness exists in three main types, orders or systems of organization.
Initial to my description of consciousness is that—whatever consciousness is exactly—consciousness is primarily composed of awareness of reality and of connectedness to reality. Meaning that, a conscious being knows reality exists around them; and knows that they are part of reality as an active creative being within reality.
Another huge claim with my observation of consciousness is that I am rejecting the assumption that consciousness exists as one entire piece. Moreover, I am defining—describing—consciousness as being partitioned, yet interconnected as three divisions of labor, into types or orders of responsibility within any conscious being.
Of course, the acceptance of this perspective of consciousness all depends on the observer’s ability to interpret the data of reality.
For instance, critical to my honest observations of consciousness is that consciousness is at its nucleus: awareness of and connectedness to reality. Almost immediately, this acceptance of reality leads to another crucial observation. Consciousness, in general, does not need to be at the same level as a human being’s consciousness experiences.
