Chapter-8: Willy Wells Knows Best
Two Kodiak bears fought on the western rocky beach of Shuyak Island. They heaved and grunted and charged. The massive balls of brown slammed into each other, as white cotton clouds opened above them. The Alaskan sunlight smacked both bears in the face, causing each brute to wince and slap each other even harder. Both bears yelled and held their mouths wide open. They extended their lips forward in deep roars, nodding with heated aggression and dripping saliva and snot all over the ground.
Near the shore, several humpback whales breeched and shot out air and slammed their tails on the water. Further south on the beach, a pod of sea lions huddled together eating the remains of a dead orca. While swaggering danger close by the two brown beasts, a lone saber-honey badger growled through clenched teeth at the two Kodiaks to be quiet. The badger wanted more peace as it settled in to eat its orca meat and blubber.
Up north from the two male bears, a lone female Kodiak smelled of heat and ripeness, all ready for the victor to claim his prize. She waddled and grunted out of sight, scratching her massive rear hump against a tall Sitka spruce.
The space between the two bears and the saber-honey badger warped and shimmered, sending heat waves in every direction. From the water, a curious humpback whale swam on its side and watched the space open. Its side eye widened on the large muscular specimen that stepped out. The land animal looked at the whale with scolding canary-yellow eyes and yawned.
The humpback whale choked and shuddered. It dove quickly and managed to swim away with frantic tail flaps of disbelief.
The two bears froze, all quiet and wide eyed. Their gaping mouths drooled as they glanced at the new beast. Even the saber-honey badger held its breath as the yellow eyes pierced right through him. The Kodiaks whimpered and tripped backward and sprinted away. The honey badger huffed and shrugged, and power walked—in annoyance—to the north, chasing after the bears.
Cana walked with his head held low. He sighed and watched all the animals scatter and race away in fear. He sniffed at the air and looked at the dead orca. Another sniff and Cana faced inward on the island, to the east. An exasperated sigh deflated from him as he trudged along in a defeated head sway.
